LISC AmeriCorps program fosters community engagement.

In 2010 a collaborative of neighborhood leaders, stakeholders and community partners began working together toward development of a sustainable food system in Cincinnati's Avondale neighborhood. Gabriel's Place opened its doors on September 30, 2011 in the heart of Avondale. The ribbon-cutting ceremony showcased the myriad of partnerships and collaborations behind the initiative, named Most Outstanding Collaborative Effort in 2011 by the Community Development Corporation Association of Greater Cincinnati. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked a new level of commitment to community health in Avondale, demonstrated as Vice Mayor Roxanne Qualls delivered a proclamation of "Gabriel's Place Day."

The property, donated by the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio, has been redeveloped to accommodate gardens and hoop-houses, a community kitchen and business incubator, meeting facilities and a farmer's market. LISC Program Officer Brandon Holmes brokered partnerships and provided critical project-management assistance to the project. LISC AmeriCorps member Troy Frasier developed the region's first aquaponics model, constructed at Gabriel's Place to develop leadership within the Avondale Youth Council.
